Euro 2012 update – England bow out miserably!

Germany cruised into the semis, Portugal sneaked by Czech Republic, Spain brushed France aside and England blew a penalty shoot-out yet again, although they were well out-played anyway.

Still, they got further than most of we Englishmen expected so we have to take heart from that. England played quite well in spurts during the tournament, and have to take pride in finally beating our nemesis, Sweden, in a competitive match, but went back into their shell yesterday against Italy, seemingly determined to take it to penalties and an inevitable defeat, as witnessed by nearly every penalty shoot-out we’ve been involved in. Same old story.

The plan, if there was one, seemed to be to just defend at all costs, since England hardly had any possession and didn’t seem to be that bothered about having any anyway. That’s definitely no way to win football matches, and I personally didn’t enjoy watching it because it was such a negative approach to the game. Very much like the match v France – France did nearly all the attacking and pressing and England seemed to be content just to soak it up.

I hope there’s a long-term plan here and that it’s put into effect in time for the 2014 World Cup, hopefully involving retaining possession and creating chances and attempting to win matches. Otherwise, I for one may turn the television to another channel, and may be reduced to watching “Dancing With The Stars”!

I’m counting on you saving me from such a terrible fate, England!!!!
